Call for Submissions
The Philanthropy and Education SIG promotes academic discourse on the topic of philanthropy and education with an emphasis on exploring the effective, socially responsive, and ideals-driven giving of individuals, corporations, and foundations within changing contexts. Given the vast amounts of funds associated with it, the philanthropic sector has the capacity to perform an incredible amount of good; however, as articulated in the CIES 2022 theme, philanthropic activity may also give rise to intolerance, nativism, fundamentalism, ideological rigidity. Perhaps unintentionally, when it occurs, this might also trigger political discord. Changes in the global political and social landscape in the past decade, which have caused the above-mentioned issues to come to the fore, make it imperative that the immense amount of resources held by philanthropists can be mobilized in a way that fosters idealism, solidarity, peace, justice, and inclusion. Thus, the Philanthropy and Education SIG invites individual paper and group panel submissions on research that examines the growing role of philanthropy and how philanthropic organizations can bring good into the world through a spirit of idealism and adapting to current challenges, including that of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We welcome a broad range of research methodologies and policy analyses that cut across cultural, disciplinary, methodological, and geographical boundaries, including but not limited to: the giving culture, institutional structures, governance, networks, strategic priorities, and the impact on local communities.
